The revenue generated from a local college or university has always had a substantial impact to the economic health of that community. Wilmington has two educational institutes that contribute greatly to the financial well-being of the town. Those two educators are the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and Cape Fear Community College.
University of North Carolina at Wilmington (UNCW) began as an extension of UNC at Chapel Hill in 1946. The student population carries well over 13,000. The University has five academic areas that one could apply themselves.

UNCW also has a superior athletic program. The athletic department of UNCW operates under the guidelines set forth by NCAA and CAA. Sports sponsored by UNCW include men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, swimming and diving, golf, track and field, tennis, softball, baseball and cross country. Wilmington does not have a professional team in town so UNCW sports have always been enjoyable alternative.
Cape Fear Community College opened their doors in 1959. Starting out with only 750 students, CFCC now enrolls 30,000 students. The college offers technical programs or a two year college transfer degree to continue their education at a four year institute.
