As a REALTOR® I’m often asked, “What can I do with this couch/dresser/table/bed? I don’t have time to put it on Craigslist and it’s still in decent shape, someone could use it.”
And I am always happy to suggest Sharing Our Bounty!
I first learned of Sharing Our Bounty back in late 2010. I had some pieces of furniture that still had lots of good years left in them but I had no space for them and wanted to see that they went to someone who could really use them. I remember when my children were young and money was tight. Shoot, my first end tables were cardboard boxes with tablecloths covering them! So paying it forward by sharing what I no longer needed was very important to me.
Sharing Our Bounty was started in 2010 when Kerry Fitzgerald and her husband, Shawn, took God’s whispering in their ears to heart. With no non-profit experience, they dove headfirst into finding a meaningful way to help people in our community.
Sharing Our Bounty is a Christian organization that began in February 2010 to serve as a resource for families facing hardship in our community. Our mission is to demonstrate God’s love and grace to people in need in the greater Wilmington area by matching their tangible needs with the compassionate donations of neighbors. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and volunteer- operated.
With a remarkable group of volunteers Sharing Our Bounty helps furnish homes for families and individuals who would otherwise be unable to afford even the basics. Through the generous donations of area residents they provide couches, end tables, coffee tables, kitchenware, microwaves, dressers, beds, tables, chairs, lamps, and linens at no cost to the recipients. Imagine what a Blessing those items are to a family who is getting back on their feet.
Here’s how it works – If you have large items to donate, complete the Donate form on their website to be placed on the schedule for pickup, always the 2nd or 4th Saturday of each month. Smaller items should be dropped off, and all items must be in working order and good condition. There is always a need for beds and bed frames but they don’t take king beds as most of the recipients aren’t in spaces large enough.
Most of the beds they receive don’t come with the frames so they’ve been out of pocket $32 every time they deliver a bed. There is a GOFUNDME campaign currently underway to raise funds for the purchase of 100 bed frames.
It’s such a simple way to help others. And what better time than now, with Spring cleaning in full swing!, to help your neighbors by sharing your bounty!
